SUMMARY:
While traveling south after having discovered that the north is no place for a clouded leopard family, the son of Nridev and Vedha of the Lon Gi clouded leopard tribe has a terrible accident, and is rescued by a most unlikely savior..
---
"I am sorry," Nrivdev says in meek apology to his wife. He is a clouded leopard, appearing to be in the prime of fatherhood, although he is a bit on the thin side. The female that follows him is his wife Vedha, barely a third of his size and a bit younger, though not by much. She has about her an air of consternation, although the look she gives her mate is as patient as she's able to manage. "It's alright, my love," she sighs as they both make their way through the brushy world around them. They are in the northern plains, having hoped to establish territory, but have found it much too cold and barren to survive. Their cub, a juvenile, bounds ahead of them in good spirits, despite the dejection and the sense of failure that both adults have. "The Turags tried to warn us, but we would not listen. We are fortunate to have survived, anyway." They can hear the sound of the river closely, which will be their guide back into the southern rainforest, and it is toward this that they are now headed.
The snow leopardess Uncia is resting on the edge of her territory, dozing after a long morning of hunting. She has also been on the hunt for a potential mate, and also any potential enemies who might be trespassing in her southern territory she has marked for the past two winter seasons. With winter entrenched in the northern mountains and food running scarce, she has been forced to move toward the more warmer southern climates. It is a bit difficult for a southern snow leopardess in the warmer more mild climate down here, but she manages to get by. At least there is more food here. So for now Uncia rests by the river, dozing and flicking her tail back and forth as she listens to the raging river, in flood from melted snow run-off from the Himalayan range. She falls asleep to the roar of the river, which is actually soothing to the lonely snow leopardess who could use some company or purrrrhaps---a mate??? She dozes off into a cat-nap slumber, dreaming of the day when she'd be able to raise a family of her own.
The male laughs with relief as he finally emerges from the grass at the top of a high bank overlooking the river. "There, you see?" he calls back to his wife, as he's joined by their energetic child. "If you would have faith in your husband but for a moment, you would see I am right! It is right here!" His wife does not point out that they have been hearing and following the sound of the river for some hours, so of course it would be there...she just rubs against his side with affection as she turns her gaze south. "You know, dear, we shall have to cross it," she says, with some concern. "To re-enter the territory of the Turags.." The couple eyes the surging waters with some anxiety, while the cub parts ways with them and moves off down the bank. His mother turns with some irritation, calling out, "Kavin! My naughty boy, stay close to Papa!"
The slumbering snow leopardess cannot yet hear anything due to the sound of the rushing water. She has no clue that strangers are nearing her territory as they are upwind of her at the moment, and there is little wind today anyway to carry scents very far. She yawns and nibbles on a hare she managed to catch as she stares into the water. Ah yes, such a peaceful winter afternoon. Nothing could go wrong on a day like today, could it?
Kavin, plagued by a spirit of mischief, bolts as his mother calls out to him. When the mother gives chase, the father follows, giving him extra incentive to flee as fast as his ungainly legs can carry him. He has no desire to feel their buffeting and smacking paws for his disobedience, and this lends him speed. He keeps to the riverbank, imagining himself an eagle soaring up over the water, away from his parents, into... "RAAR!" He cries out with pain as he cuts his paw on a sharp stone, losing his balance...and tumbling into the ice-cold water. Nridev, his father, cannot roar, but both parents scream as high and despairing as they can as the cub disappears downstream much, much faster than they or the cub could have run. The unfortunate youth splutters and writhes in the water as he is born downstream, crying out every time his head comes above water, wailing for his parents, before he is thrust beneath the surface.
The snow leopardess was just getting closer and closer to REM sleep, when suddenly a cry can be heard. Definitely not in her dream. She quickly awakens, and raises her head, scanning the woods first. No its not coming from there. She turns her focus to the, water!!! Yes, its coming from the river. Cries of a cub of some kind! She scans the water rapidly, quickly rising to her paws, and spots the cub coming her way down around the corner of a riverbank. The snow leopardess notices its not a snow leopard cub, but a strangely colored leopard she has never seen before. She gasps in horror, and takes a look at the raging flood, knowing she could be risking her own life as well by what she is about to do. She hesitates only one more second, cats hate the water right? But she must do this. She leaps with all her energy and might into the raging flood, man its a lot colder in winter than summer. She can only imagine what the cub is going through, the ice cold water hurts like daggers, stinging her now frozen fur. She swims with all her might and energy toward the cub now in the center of the river following the cub, closing in as they round another bend. However, to the horror of both cub and snow leopardess, and to the parents on the bank, a large waterfall looms not far away about mile downstream. The roar is frightening!!!!
The cub struggles, but his tiny body is no match for the power and anger of the river. He can't even see the edge, and soon cannot see anything at all, as darkness overwhelms him and he is thrown, unconscious, toward the edge. His parents both come around the corner, losing sight of their son and seeing only some massive, silver cat also fighting the raging river rapids. "Is it a god...?" Nridev breathes, struggling to catch his breath and too horrified to be able to think straight. Vedha leans against him, sobbing wildly. "The spirit of the river goes to consume him," she cries in anguish, burying her face against her husband's flank. Neither has the strength to brave the river without dying, themselves, and the male's only option is to watch with resignation, sure that he is about to see his child's end.
The two are swept through the raging flood, the snow leopardess fighting the pain from the daggers piercing her body from the frozen water, she too is losing strength and energy, and no, she's not a god, just a good samaritan. She works her way toward the child and manages to grab him by the scruff of his neck, but loses him. She swims with all her might toward the cub and the waterfall, grabbing the cub just in time, but now they are just moments from being swept over to their deaths on the jagged rocks below. She drags the cub by the scruff as best she can toward the riverbank, the bank is high and steep here, near the edge of the waterfall, and she reaches it after a moment, but is almost expended all her energy. She tries to reach some vines and roots dangling down from a tree overlooking the ten foot cliff-bank, and desperately clings to them, wrapping her paws around them and her legs as well with the cub in her muzzle. "Please....." She cries out to the adults. "Help pull us up. I don't know how much longer I can hold on!" She is soaking wet and probably near hypothermic at this point, her body temperature dangerously low. She can only imagine what the poor cub is going through.
Nridev and Vedha hear the leopard's cry, and it certainly isn't godlike...which reassures them that she may just be another mortal cat like themselves. And the male gives his wife a nudge as the drama unfolds and he realizes that she's got their cub. "Vedha! Come, quickly!" Both of the small cats race to the river's edge. The male hooks his claws into the bank and hangs with his body next to the snow leopard's, trying to give her a push to help her climb. His wife puts her weight onto a sturdy looking bush, bending it down so that she can hopefully get a grip of it with her claws. Neither parent can take their eyes off of the limp bundle in her teeth.
The exhausted and frigid Uncia tries with all her might to climb, and not drop the cub, expending just about every watt of energy she has left in her body. She nearly slips about five or six times before finally making it to the cliff, edge, the panting sounds she makes is most terrifying, as if gasping for her last breaths of air. She deposits the cub on the bank, and can see blurry forms of the leopards standing before her, "He He He's s s s safe." She chatters from the icy water dripping off her frozen fur, sending uncontrollable chills down her spine, the pain from the dagger like ice-cube water still fresh in her mind. She takes one last breath before collapsing in a heap unconscious before them. Is she dead? Only time will tell that story.
Of first concern is Kavin, but fortunately they are two, not one. "Vedha...tend to her," Nrivdev says, and with both gratitude and concern, the clouded leopard female sets about gently cleaning the other's fur and rubbing her body along the other cat's flanks to warm her. While she does this, the father presses his paws to his son's ragged body and pushes in short bursts until the little one coughs up a frightening amount of water and mewls. The grown male curls himself around his son and licks his face and body, ridding him of the ice-cold water. "Rest," he murmurs, nuzzling their beloved cub. "We're here. Mama's right there..." He moves so that Kavin can see his mother working to keep the snow leopard alive. The cub accepts a nuzzle from her before she goes back to her task and he lays his head down to rest. While he does, the adults begin to converse in low tones, in an usual dialect Uncia would not recognize, were she awake. After a long conversation and agreement, they wait, patiently, for their large cousin to awaken.
The snow leopardess had a strange dream. She was walking toward this strange light. But a paw reached out and stopped her. The leopard introduced himself as Najar God of life. He told her that cats have nine lives, and while she had basically used up almost all of them during this rescue, he was going to give her a chance to fulfill her life. After all she'd be regarded as a hero, and a hero shouldn't die tragically like this. So Najar blessed her and sent her back away from the light. What seemed like a few moments, was actually a number of hours real time, and when the snow leopardess finally comes too, coughing up water for quite some time herself, when her vision finally returns to adequate levels, she sees she is still near the river. Still shaking, but at least alive, the snow-leopardess raises her weak head and blinks as her eyes open, glancing around. She gasps for air, taking in deep breaths as she gathers her strength.
The two clouded leopards remain with the snow leopard throughout her period of unconsciousness. Kavin, exhausted and frightened, does not move an inch from where he's left by his father when the cat goes hunting, his mother taking over the job of keeping the cub company. At last she comes to, and when she does, the clouded leopard pair are watching her. "Nridev," Vedha murmurs, and the male speaks after Uncia has caught her breath once more. "You have done us a greater service than you could possibly imagine," he says. "My name is Nridev...and this is my wife, Vedha. Do you recognize what we are?" Kavin sits between his mother's forepaws, watching the much larger leopard shyly.
The snow leopardess, still shaking, but recovering with each moment looks the clouded leopards over, smelling their scents as well. She dips her head politely. "My name is Uncia..from the far north. Where there are many mountains and much snow and ice. But as a feline, I tend to avoid the water. I saw your cub in distress and had no choice, I had to act." She replies. "I would only hope someone would come to the aid of my child some day if he or she ever needed that type of assistance." She shakes her head. "I am sorry, but I have never met your kind before. They must not venture up in my area often. I only come down here in the heart of the winters." She looks over at the cub. "And who might you be little one? How are you feeling?"
Kavin quickly hides his face, and his mother rests a reassuring paw against him. "His name is Kavin," she says, smiling and taking up where her mate left off. "You are correct...our kind are not accustomed to these northern colds. We came here hoping that the territory might be suitable, but we were wrong." She glances to Nridev when she says 'we', and the male coughs delicately and gestures her to continue. "We are clouded leopards..we come from the forests far, far south of here." Her eyes take on a playful glitter. "But also, we are more than that, Uncia of the north...something that might be of use to you one day for your bravery and kindness."
Uncia smiles. "Well Kavin, I must say you must have nine lives. You were quite brave yourself back there, holding onto me like that. I am thankful to our spirit Najar that you are ok. Thank heavens. If I had perished at least I would have perished doing a good dead and have been welcomed to become a spirit myself." She says. "But thankfully I do not have to worry about this now." She listens carefully to the clouded leopard. "Clouded leopards. A beautiful species from what I see." She says. "Oh? and what else are you, aside from leopards from the south?" She asks. She glances to Kavin. "A strong boy you have." She remarks and smiles. "He'll make a fine father some day."
Vedha continues to smile, herself, keeping a paw on her cub as he desperately hides his face. "We are of the tribe and blood of Lon Gi," she says, and Nridev licks at one of his wife's ears. "Lon Gi was our beginning, and as yet his children have no end. We do not often reveal ourselves to an outsider, and usually not without permission, but there is an exception." She falls silent, and once again, the male speaks. "When a creature has shown a spirit of courage to the benefit of a Lon Gi, who owes him nothing, it is customary for an invitation to be offered. We have a litany, a list of names tracing our family back to our first ancestor, Lon Gi and his wife. It has..holes. There are some who have betrayed the tribe and themselves, whom we have forgotten, and do not speak of. And there are also in that litany other names, who are not Lon Gi but are still just as much a part of our family as our own leopard kin." He bows his head solemnly. "We would like to speak with our Elders and have your name included in our litany. You would be honored and remembered by all of us, for what you have done, and if ever you are in need of aid, then you have but to call, and if we are able, or have friends that may assist you, they will gladly come. It is the least we can offer you for saving the life of our son...if the Elders agree and shall come to meet with you, would you accept?"
The snow leopardess sits upright at this , nearly whacking her head into a bush. "Whoa...you mean like I'd kinda be part of the tribe and all..?" She asks. She just stares for awhile as it all sinks in. "All for this one act of kindness, I am now considered a hero by your tribe?" She just sits there in shock and amazement having never expected anything like this. "This is all so amazing, I never expected such gratitude like this. Of course I accept. And of course it would be an honor to be included in such a litany." She beams as a wave of pride seeps through her, feeling her fur stand on end as the warmth from her spirit Najar invigorates her chilled body.
Nridev does his best to remain solemn, although he's just as delighted to receive a positive response. "Then it's settled...my wife and I are returning to the territory of one of our Elders, Turag and his wife. We shall let him know what has happened here and he will put out a call for some of our number to come north to welcome you and sing the litany with your name." He stands, followed by Vedha, who gives Kavin a nudge to encourage the cub to rise, also. "We should be back before the season changes, but we will send a messenger ahead of us to let you know that we are coming. It has been an honor to have met you, Uncia...we are in your debt."
Uncia smiles. "I am eager to meet this Turag." she says. She is still beaming as she watches them start to depart. "It is such an honor, you have no idea." She says. "What this means to me. Perhaps Najar will bless me witha mate..." She glances over at Kavin. "And Young Kavin, you be careful now around floods from now on, mind your parents, they know whats best for you." She says with a smile. "I look forward to seeing you all again soon." She responds. "For now I must rest it has been a long, hard, battle with the river."

She beams as a wave of pride seeps through her, feeling her fur stand on end as the warmth from her spirit Najar invigorates her chilled body.
