Bhata the tiger and Gyarahabala the wolf meet for lunch by the lake to discuss recent happenings. They have an unexpected visit from Baimei, the golden tiger.
---
Bhata is spending the day doing some strength and conditioning training encircling the lake, several times, as well as some long distance swimming. Currently, he is in the water finishing up his 29th lap across the lake. He doesn't notice anyone else nearby at the moment, as his energy is focused on completing his goals.
Gyarahabala spent much of yesterday swimming. Very invigorating, but he overextended himself a bit and his soreness made for a difficult night trying to catch any sleep. After having successfully hunted himself a rat, the three-legged wolf makes his way to the lakeshore to enjoy it, and a cool refreshing drink ... but wait, who is that splashing about?
The orange tiger, with heavy scarred slash mark along his right side, and the torn left ear he received in the big battle with his father Vijayi, is easily recognizeable as Bhata, former heir of Sakht Nakh, turned traitor. It is only as he reaches the bank Gyara is having 'dinner' on. He grins ...."Nothing beats rat on a stick, or rat in your paws." He says with a chuckle. "Though I thought you might prefer some fish? He places a couple of freshly caught carp fish on the bank, grinning.
Gyarahabala pants a bit. "Thanks, but I already caught this. What have you been up to, old friend?" Funny, Gyarahabala calling Bhata old -- Bhata's several years younger!
Baimei is following the old scent of other Ran Garjana tigers, catching up with where they've been since her course deviated from theirs on the way out. It's led her here, to the edge of the lake, and she lifts her nose to sniff as she finds a patch of torn-up ground, the traces of other scents - other tigers - and the lingering, coppery tang of blood. Their hunt was more successful than hers, it seems. She chuffs softly, tasting the air to make sense of it. The scents are muddled together, trampled down by other scents. But there's something... she pauses, mid-breath, at the sound of voices near the shore, and pads closer.
Bhata smiles at the wolf. "Been conditioning myself, for what trials may be yet to come. I must be prepared for anything these days. The new clan attacked two tiger siblings, killed one of them, and I think Bhaskar is hiding the other one. This is a dire time my friend, we must use extreme caution with whomever we meet. We do not know if they may be allies, enemies, or spies conspiring with the enemy." He looks across the lake for a moment. "I...may have to relocate somewhere where my presence will not hinder the goals of the alliance. For wherever I seem to roam, trouble always seems to follow." He says with a flick of his tail as he digs into one of the fish.
Gyarahabala nods his head. "I know, Bhaskar informed me. There is a new, unfamiliar tiger about. He gave no indication to myself, or Bhaskar -- and, truly, Bhaskar is much keener as my senses are not as sharp as they once were -- that he is Ran Garjana. He seemed truly sickened when we told him what Ran Garjana was doing. His name is Narain," Gyarahabala says.
Speaking of meeting new people, here comes Baimei, padding in through a patch of tall grass. She pauses there, a moment, her golden pelt a good camouflage amidst the swaying grass as her ears perk for a bit more of the conversation, and then she takes another step forward. She could keep skulking, but that's hardly her style. She can find out much more about this tiger and wolf if she simply approaches - and so she does, calling out a soft greeting.
Bhata thumps his tail against a log by the riverbank as he listens to his friend. "Narain...you say?" "Does he smell of the tigers who killed the sibling sister? If not, he is most likely telling the truth." "He could be a valuable member of our alliance, if we can convince him to join our cause." The tiger grins. "We will have to speak with him and see if he will join the just cause of peace." He finishes off the first carp and is just about to start on the second one when he spies a notices movement in the brush and hears a call from a female tiger, an unknown female tiger to him. He blinks also as she is golden pelted, and qutie beautiful. He offers a warm friendly greeting of his own. "Hello, M'arm." "What brings you out to the lake this fine evening? If it is food ye seek, you need not worry about hunting, for I would be honored to share my second catch with as beautiful a tigress as you." He waits to see if she will accept his offer of the carp. "Name's Bhata..." He adds.
Gyarahabala says to Bhata, "I could not say, as I was not here when she was attacked and did not get a sniff to associate directly with them. The rank blood of the dead sister and her wounded brother overpowers much any other latent scents here for my nose to tell me much." He grinds and crunches through the rat's body, his hackles a bit raised at yet another unfamiliar tiger about, but he lets his larger, younger friend do the talking this time. He ponders more strategies and tactics for dealing with Ran Garjana to discuss with Bhata, but with the unexpected visitor, he clams up.
Baimei smiles softly. "A... mystery, I suppose. There was a scent of tigers, traveling together." In actual fact, she knows exactly who those tigers are, and was with them when they first set out - though there's still a mystery drawing her. Just what did they do, here, while she was gone? Any scent of theirs on her is faint from her time apart - faint enough to be accounted for by her story of following their trail. She pads forward slowly, looking from one to the other, and smiles to Bhata. "If you would share your catch, I would be honored." All the memories of the polite rituals she learned growing up are being useful, now... and sharing food is one of the quickest paths to friendship.
Bhata grins. "Very well, Miss....what do I call you anyway?" He asks her. He deposits the fish on a rock slab nearby for her to eat. "Your coat has the shine of one who has goodness in their heart. I can sense it." He says. "So you're following the trail of the new clan as well?" He wonders. He is intrigued by this beautiful tigress, in fact the first time he has shown true interest in a lady in a long time. He looks her up and down. "I haven't seen you around here before, where are you from?" He asks. "If you don't mind me asking?" Bhata nods in response to Gyara's words, not wanting to give away secrets in case she turns out to be a tigress they cannot trust.
Gyarahabala rolls his eyes. Bhata, bhata, bhata ... schmooze like that is going to make me lose my lunch! The old three-legged wolf tends to his rat lunch, saying nothing.
Baimei laughs gently. "My mother is from past the mountains, as is my name. Baimei, she called me. My father is of Do-Rakhanaa, and I have come from their territories to find my own." All of it - every word - is true, and her expression is clear and open as she says it. She just leaves out the part about that being nearly two years ago; the part about how now she lives amongst the Ran Garjana. Truths make for the best deception. She lowers her head, to take a delicate bite of the offered fish.
Bhata looks to Baimei. "Do-Rakhanaa you say? Then that golden pelt matches your golden heart." He says. "Any friend of the Do-Rakhanaa is a friend of mine." "Wouldn't you agree Gyara?" he asks his wolven friend. "We are in the need of tigers who share our values of peace throughout the lands, and who would like to be a part of our alliance. I am wondering if you would perhaps like to join us?" It never hurts to gain a new ally, does it?" "And well, I find you to be rather attractive, and wouldn't mind you nangin' around once in awhile, if ya know what I mean." The tiger says with a grin, looking her over once more. "How's the fish?" He asks. "Is it too your liking Ms. Baimei?" He looks to the wolf and whispers to him "She seems fine to me, what do you think about her joining us?"
Gyarahabala 's eyes roll. "Why don't you ask to marry her while you're at it?" he grunts. "Jeez ... is that how tigers court?" he mutters to himself as much as Bhata. "Suddenly, out of the blue, 'Have my fish' and 'I found you to be rather attractive' and 'Would you like to walk with me on the beach by the moonlight?'" He shakes himself and looks to Baimai. "Do-Rakhanaa, you say? I happen to have some friends. Have you a Do-Bhagavaana companion?" he asks, sniffing in her direction for any latent scents of a jackal, besides Lakshmi's scent which still lingers in the area.
Baimei ducks her head slightly, smiling. Flattery will get you... certain places, with Baimei. Mostly, to be thought a fool. But just because someone is a fool, doesn't mean she won't continue talking to them. "I hardly know what's going on, around here. I mean... join you for what? I don't even know whose territories adjoin this spot." With that gentle deferral, she turns her attention to Gyarahabala. "No, I don't." It's not all that strange; not all Do-Rakhanaa do, after all. "The only face I have is my own." A reference to the Rhakanaa's god, there. She was paying attention when her dad talked, really!
Bhata nods. "Well I've never met a Do-Rakhanaa I hadn't liked. So you'll fit in nicely. To join our alliance, one does not need a territory m'arm. I am mainly interested in befriending those who wish peace upon our lands, and who will work to undermine the authority of the new clan that is encroaching into our borders. We are an alliance of all like minded creatures, predator and prey alike, with but one goal, to keep our home-lands free. This new clan seems intent on wiping out all those they believe to be inferror. Well, I'm sorry, but, I cannot stand for that. We fought one great war already, and I'm going to put an end to this new threat before it turns into another war." "So what do you say, Baimei, will you join our cause, for peace for all creatures in all the lands?" He glances at Gyara, "From what I've been told not all Do-Rakhanaa have a companion." "Am I right?"
Gyarahabala says, "Not all children of Do-Rakhanaa grow up to be, either," he says. He turns to Baimei, "Do you walk the path?"
Baimei listens to Bhata, making slight gestures of her head without quite making agreement or disagreement. "I have sought my own path. Do-Bhagavaana has two faces. I have two varga. To balance them both..." she trails off, and is silent for a moment. "It has been some time since I last walked through Do-Rakhanaa land. My mother's kin..." She looks off to the mountains for a moment, and shrugs. "There is still much I do not know. The Two-People are only one of my peoples."
Gyarahabala flicks his ears. "The Do-Rakhanaa I know have no fixed land. I guess your father's varga is different?" he asks. "This land is rife with Anupayukta of the vilest variety," he says. "Their Chamdra Mauta will come in time, however." He decides there is little point in hiding his own identity. "I am Gyarahabala, honored to have been bestowed Amgikrita by a local varga."
Baimei shrugs her shoulders. "Any tiger holds his territory, or hers. If they are of the Varga, and keep their land in accordance with the laws, then one can say the territory is of the family, though an individual walks it." She pauses a moment, and nods to the introduction, smiling. "Greetings, Gyarahabala." She doesn't seem to recognize the name in the slightest, not even for a distinctive three-legged wolf.
Gyarahabala says, "Many Do-Rakhanaa tend to keep themselves mobile and unattached to any particular patch of earth. In time of need, to dispense with particularly dangerous Anupayukta, various vargas may unite temporarily. I'm sure, if you did not strongly favor your father's varga, that political stuff is probably boring to you."
Baimei smiles. "My father was getting on in years. He left the wandering to the younger and more restless," she says, with a glance over towards Bhata - just as old looking, but far less settled seeming - and then back to Gyarahabala. "I still visit there, from time to time. But... ah, I am still Bachchaa, there. Still a child, in that varga." She pauses for a moment, considering. "Perhaps, when the moon is full, I shall come and hear more of those who walk out of the balance. Until then.. I am glad for the warning. Care will guide my steps; may it also guide yours."
Bhata returns from catching a couple more fish for the lady....having missed the last round of the conversation. "I have caught more fish for you Baimei, you will need your energy for your journey. The fish from this lake are quite delicious." He says. "Would you care to take a stroll by the river some night just you and I...I would like to learn more about you, if you catch my drift." He deposits the two fish at her paws. "My gift to you M'am." Bhata can be such a kiss up at times especially when it comes to the ladies ;-)
Gyarahabala listense intently, then decides, for the sake of keeping his lunch in his stomach, he should leave Bhata's lines between Bhata and this golden tigress and daughter of Do-Rakhanaa. "If you would pardon me," the wolf woofs, "I would hope to speak with you later to learn about your varga," he says to Baimei, then casts a glance to Bhata. "Go get her, tiger," he says to his friend, then picks up the remainder of his half-eaten rat and heads off to finish it in peace.
Baimei nods to Gyarahabala, as the wolf departs. "Perhaps I shall come to Chamdra Mauta," she repeats to him as he departs. The tigress seems... amused, mostly, by Bhata. It does mean she has a smile for him, though, and at that suggestion of a riverside stroll. "Perhaps," she replies, and smiles, lowering her head to sniff at fish and take another delicate bite, chewing it while her mind works. The wolf... no threat of himself, though she's playing a dangerous game, if he is as close to the Do-Rakhanaa as he seems. But he's probably at the least in some doubt about her, now, and that's a useful tool. This tiger, though - he seems utterly besotted. And that's a fascinating place for him to be. "Where shall I find you, when the stars shine on the waters? I have no territory of my own, these days. I have not yet found the proper place for myself."
Bhata flicks his tail. "Normally you could just follow my scent, I move quite often, due to the situation I am in, but my main territory is the desert in the west...by the well." He says. "It is the only place I have been able to find true peace....since the days I left the Sakht Nakh and restored peace to the lands." He says. "I would invite you to visit there sometime, but I don't know how much tigresses would enjoy the desert. The river seems like a more, logical choice of venue for a stroll."
Baimei nods her head softly, and smiles. "Well. Should I need to find you, then... I'll look there, if I don't see you roaming along the riverbanks first." The mention of Sakht Nakh gets no reaction from her; a vague recognition of it, but she doesn't much seem to care about it in any form.
