Daya the dholepup brings papa Sri and nice lady Chiti together.
----
Daya is on the hunt! She is not playing, she is on a mission, hunting for the elusive DADDY. Daddies aren't hunted with stealth, though, daddies are hunted with ... YAPYAPYAP!
Sri has been /trying/ to catch a few winks, curled up on a cushion of pine needles, the afternoon sun filtering through the pines casting golden shadows on his short fur. He's juuust drifting off when: YAPYAPYAPYAPYAP! The male's head jerks up and he snorts, trying to get his legs under him -- too late! BAM. DAYA.
Daya waggies excitedly. "Daddy! I met a nice dhole! She wants to meet you!" The puppy yaps excitedly. "She has a pack nearby, in those woods! She's awful nice! Her name is Chiti!"
Indeed, not so far off from where a daddy is getting a rude awakening, Chiti is sitting in a patch of sun near the three pines she showed the pup previously. A pack? Well, more the sad remnants of one... she sighs, enjoying the sunlight, if not so much her thoughts.
Sri blinks twice, snorting, startled, and shoves himself into an upright position and then to all fours, glancing around, newly alert, face going more serious. "Really? You oughtn't to talk to strangers--" simultaneously stern and distracted. "Where is she, then?" he lowers his head to give Daya a nudge, a little mouthy nip to the ear, and then takes a few steps forward, letting out a little yap.
Daya points with her muzzle over to the trees where Chiti is sitting. "Over there. She's really nice, daddy," she insists.
Chiti looks up to the sky, and lifts her head to let out a coo-ing whistle, the noise dholes make to keep the pack together. Not that she really expects any response - that pup she met and her family have probably moved on, by now.
Sri's head cocks suddenly, and he huffs in a breath, body tensing. His lips pulling back, he mimics the noise, and then repeats it again a moment later, ears cupping forward.
An... answer? Chiti's ears perk, and she calls out again as she draws herself to her feet and starts moving in that direction. She doesn't recognize the other voice, but only a dhole would make that sound - and she intends to find out who. She coos again as she trots closer - she's getting near to where she met that pup. Perhaps they haven't left yet!
"Stay back there," Sri commands Daya, although really the damage has already been done. Then he starts forward, his tail horizontal, waving slowly -- he's being cautious, his stance not hostile, exactly, but not too friendly either. "Hey you, is this Chiti I'm hearing?" it's awkward, the call, and trails off into that here-I-am-where-are-you noise.
Daya whines in complaint. "But she's a nice lady, daddy!" She yap-growls in frustration and sits pensively.
Chiti smiles as she hears her name. The chance of this being Daya's father is getting better all the time! She comes out into the open enough to see his defensive stance, and seems unconcerned by it. Of course he's protective. He's got younglings! Her own posture is quite non-threatening, tail curved out behind her and faintly wagging, ears perked with curiosity and eyes taking Sri in with interest. "I am Chiti," she calls back. "Are you Sri?"
Sri's nose twitches as the other dhole comes into sight, and he streeetches his neck out, considering, his paws braced. "Ye-essss." Drawing the word out. And then all at once the intensity drops out of his posture and he prances forward, making little excited chirping sounds. "Is there a local clan? I haven't smelled anything--"
Daya arrrs. Chiti's a nice lady! But the pup remains obediently where father had left her behind.
Chiti beats her tail more quickly for a moment as Sri starts forward, that tense moment of consideration over and her mouth opening in a smile. She comes in to meet him, nose twitching as she takes in his scent. At his question, her ears twitch back for just one moment. "Jokhim wndered here, but... our last adventure proved too much, it seems."
"They were your clan? What happened?" Sri glances over his shoulder to see what Daya's up to, eyes narrowing briefly -- he doesn't want her getting up to -anything-.
Daya gives dad "the look." She hasn't moved, but she's miffed dad doesn't trust her. She's a whole month old, that means her judgment is sound, right?
Chiti nods, and glances over to where Sri is looking as well, and smiles at the pup before returning her attention to the father. "They were. We were always a small clan, even before, but..." she trails off, and sighs softly, then begins again. "Have you heard the rumors? Of the disappearances in the deep jungle?"
Sri is looking down and away evn before Chiti has finished speaking. "No-- my pups and I only recently left a clan where the -last- thing a dog was concerned about was what was going on outside the densite, if you know what I mean." Absently, he ambles towards Daya to nuzzle between her ears. "So -- animals have been disappearing, then. Like you said. Ech. Don't go off on your own, girl," to the pup.
Daya looks up to dad. "If animals are disappearing, then ... shouldn't we stick together?" she asks, looking between him and sri, wagging her widdle tail.
Chiti nods her understanding. She's heard about clans like that, but only in rumors - hers was always a looser, more fluid sort. It kind of had to be, with so few members, and half of them coming and going on new adventures all the time! She follows Sri back towards his pup. "Jokhim was... a very adventurous clan. Many of us went to investigate." She sighs. "I have heard nothing from them since." Daya's suggestion gets a smile.
Sri whuffs quietly. "Well." He cuffs Daya gently. "/I/ agree with her. I bet you know this place better than we do! And these two are used to have ladies around. I think they'll kill me if I'm left on my own with them." He gives Chiti his /most/ pitiful look, eyes wide and mournful, ears drooping. "We should stick together. Daya! Enchant her. Go on!"
Daya wags like crazzy, hops and yips. "We could be a new clan!"
Chiti giggles. "Pups certainly do take a great deal of running after, don't they?" she says with a grin, tail wagging. "It's no good for dholes, being alone. Even if there aren't pups... I've been going half-mad without someone to talk to!"
"Well then!" Sri does a little side-to-side prance, drops briefly into a play-bow, bounces up again. "We've been hanging around here for the moment, although we -do- like to go exploring. ... We'll be careful, though. You'll be around, then?"
Daya yaps, "Yippee!" and explodes in a blurry fury of running and zipping this way and that. A new dhole clan has the puppy's vote, and that's really what counts, right?
Chiti laughs. "There's only so much exploration you can do, with puppies around. Small legs... even when they're strong ones like Daya's!" she replies with a grin, her tail wagging. She laughs at Daya's response! It's such a good argument, really - how could she disappoint enthusiasm like that? "I'll be around. Definitely."
